The Dallas Cowboys are still frustratingly quiet in free agency. Despite Jerry Jones promising an active offseason, the only activities have been key starters departing. Dallas hasn't been able to replace any of them, including Tony Pollard.

Fortunately for Cowboys fans, there might be a positive development on that front. According to Michal Gehlken of Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys are close to signing one of Dalvin Cook or Ezekiel Elliott.

Dallas Cowboys Close to Signing an Elite Running Back

Gehlken reports both veterans have "interest" in signing with Dallas.

Bringing Zeke back has obviously been on a lot of Cowboys fans' minds. The team wasn't able to replace his production, as he registed 876 yards and 12 touchdowns in his final year in Dallas.

Elliott didn't have the season he or Patriots fans hoped for in New England as he saw further decline in his yards per carry and overall effectiveness. How much of that is Zeke versus the dysfunctional Patriots offense is certainly unclear but bringing a Cowboys fan favorite back could certainly provide a jolt after this lackluster offseason.

Dalvin Cook, has had a similarly underwhelming season with the New York Jets. Overshadowed by the rise of Breece Hall there, Cook didn't get the opportunities he was hoping for, before signing with the Baltimore Ravens ahead of the playoffs.

The 28-year-old was still a very effective and productive rusher in his last season as an RB1 in Minnesota, finishing with 1,173 yards and eight rushing scores.

Either of these former Pro Bowl running backs would do wonders for the Cowboys offense that reportedly made it a priority this offseason to improve their rushing game. Whether Jerry Jones is finally able to make something happen in free agency remains to be seen.
