Trevon Diggs Injury Saga Reveals Rift Between Jerry Jones and Mike McCarthy
By Cem Yolbulan
The Dallas Cowboys are heading to the halfway point of the season with more questions than they started the season with. With the Nov. 5 trade deadline looming, the Cowboys have plenty of holes to fill in multiple positions.
On top of it all, they have significant injuries to key players that they have to deal with. For the Week 9 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, the Cowboys will be missing Micah Parsons and DaRon Bland in addition to their already long list of players on the injured reserve list.
The defense may be even more short-handed on Sunday. Star cornerback Trevon Diggs didn't practice all week. In fact, Jerry Jones revealed on Friday that he has a "calf tear", raising concerns about his availability going forward.
As serious as a calf tear sounds, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy provided a contradicting update. McCarthy said that Diggs had a good workout on Friday and will be a game-time decision, per The Athletic's Jon Machota.
Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy Contradicts Jerry Jones About Trevon Diggs Injury
The lead decision-maker and the coaching staff providing such differing updates on a key injury is certainly concerning. If Diggs indeed has a "tear in his calf," it would be highly unlikely for him to return in one week.
This is the latest development in frustrating injury updates for the Cowboys this season. The lack of transparency with the Parsons injury was disappointing as he is set to miss his fourth straight game, significantly more than how it was portrayed when the injury occurred. Bland's return felt similarly imminent after he was activated off the IR, but he is also missing more games than the initial timeline indicated.
This indicates a situation where the front office and the coaching staff are perhaps unaligned. This is not surprising considering the fact that Jones made McCarthy a lame duck this season by not giving him a contract extension. The relationship between the two may be heading to an unsalvageable place.
