One of the most head-scratching moves by the Dallas Cowboys in recent years was trading a fourth-round pick for Trey Lance. Right before the start of the 2023 season, the Cowboys brought in Lance and made him the third-string quarterback. He was a healthy scratch all of last season.

Some have wondered whether the Cowboys were preparing Lance for the 2024 season. Instead, Lance has still yet to start a game for Dallas despite the fact that Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending injury.

Since Prescott went down, Cooper Rush took over as the QB1. In five starts with Rush under center, the Cowboys are 2-3 as the 31-year-old signal-caller has a 59.3% completion rate and put up 1,191 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions for a passer rating of 79.5.

Rush hasn't been the reason the Cowboys aren't winning games but he is also not setting the league on fire. With the Cowboys out of the playoff picture, speculations about whether it was time to replace Rush with Lance have emerged.

First, Jerry Jones shut down those speculations earlier this week and now team EVP Stephen Jones has confirmed the stance the organization has with regard to Lance. Jones said that Lance's lack of experience is a serious problem when the team is trying to win games.

Jones added that he trusts the evaluation of the coaching staff, and if they don't think Lance is ready, then that means he doesn't give the team the best chance to win.

"He’s played 10, 11, 12 college football games and not many NFL games. That’s hard... He just doesn’t have a lot of experience. When you’re trying to win the game and you don’t have that experience it’s hard."

Since being selected third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lance only started four games in the NFL. He doesn't have much starting experience in college, either, making him a raw prospect with intriguing physical and athletic tools rather than a complete NFL quarterback.

At this point, however, the Cowboys still prioritizing wins over player development is rather odd. This is a player Dallas gave up a fourth-round pick for only a year ago. He is young and clearly has some talent. Rather than giving 31-year-old Cooper Rush, who has limited upside, more reps, it probably makes more sense to give Lance a look.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like that is going to happen any time soon.
