As the Dallas Mavericks approach the NBA trade deadline, one thing has become all too apparent – trading is pointless.

The NBA trade deadline is fast approaching and with names like Kevin Love, Blake Griffin, Michael Carter-Williams, and Dwight Howard available for the right price, it’s an exciting time of the season to be an NBA fan. But with powerhouse teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, and San Antonio Spurs dominating the standings, does it even matter what anyone else does at the deadline?

It may sound like a defeatist attitude but what would be the point of finagling a trade at the NBA trade deadline? Does a team other than the previously mentioned “Big Three” really stand a chance, even if all their deadline dreams and fantasies come true?

Not really. And that’s why it doesn’t make a lick of sense for the Dallas Mavericks to do anything at the deadline this side of Jack Squat.

It’s important that we recognize how good the Big Three really are. The Golden State Warriors are leading the NBA with a 48-4 record. They are not only the best team of the 2015-16 NBA season, but they may be the best team of all-time. I know it’s reckless to throw around that “of all-time” thing but the Warriors are deserving of that consideration, since they may be about to break the 1996 Bulls 72-10 record.

In a move of aggressive apathy the Dallas Mavericks would be best served standing pat.

Golden State has been absolutely dominant this season and is on pace to break multiple records if things continue. As long as they can stay healthy, there is no reason to think they can’t roll through the playoffs unchallenged…except there’s San Antonio.

The San Antonio Spurs have some spectacularly unfortunate timing this season. They have built an extremely formidable and deep roster comprised of budding young stars, wily old vets, exceptional offense, and lock-down defense. In any other season, a team like the Spurs would be an NBA Finals favorite. They are even favored in the last 25 of 26 games this season. The only game they’re not favored? Against the Warriors.

With the Warriors existence, the Spurs are nothing more than a Miss America runner-up. They are there to claim the crown just in case something terrible happens to the Warriors along the way (like California falling into the ocean).

In case the West isn’t daunting enough, the East has their own powerhouse in the Cavs. The Lebron James led trio are Finals shoe-ins and would have little trouble dispatching any team from the West not named Spurs or Warriors.

In normal seasons, the NBA deadline would be very intriguing to middle-seeded playoff team like the Dallas Mavericks. Adding a player would be just what a team like the Mavs needs to put them over the top and give them a shot at the title.

But it’s pretty clear one piece just ain’t gonna do it. Heck, all of the pieces wouldn’t do it. The Mavs could literally add all of the top “available” players at the NBA trade deadline and they still would be longshots to upset teams like the Warriors and Spurs.

In a move of aggressive apathy the Dallas Mavericks would be best served standing pat at the NBA trade deadline 3pm tomorrow afternoon. This isn’t a time to throw in the towel but it’s also not a time to double-down and go for broke.

More from Dallas Mavericks

The best thing the Dallas Mavericks can do is to act responsibly and that entails playing for today as well as playing towards the future. The Mavs are built to be a solid team for the next couple seasons. Wesley Matthews, Dirk Nowitzki, Deron Williams, and Zaza Pachulia are a strong, but aging, nucleus. They are fun to watch and worth holding onto.

But the future of the team is Chandler Parsons, Dwight Powell, and Justin Anderson. None of those three should be seen as tradeable unless the Dallas Mavericks were to receive a younger and more talented player in return.

This is a strange time in the NBA. The delta between the Big Three and the rest of the league is wide and the way the Warriors and Spurs are built, it looks like it could remain this way for a couple more seasons. The futility of a postseason push has never been more apparent for the rest of the league (Dallas Mavericks included).

This isn’t a call to give up. Everyone should be watching and enjoying Mavs basketball this season. It’s a great team with a great coach and a great owner at a great venue. They just don’t have a shot in hell to pull off an upset in a seven game playoff series.

The NBA trade deadline is 24 hours away and the Dallas Mavericks would be wise to do nothing because, what’s the point? Better yet, what on earth would they hope to accomplish…
