Dallas Mavericks: 3 Free Agent PGs
By Reid Hanson
The Dallas Mavericks look to upgrade their point guard position this summer. Here are three free agents the Mavs could be targeting…
It’s once again decision time in Dallas. Summer time is building time for the Dallas Mavericks and with multiple starting positions up for grabs, the Mavs can go a multitude of different ways at a multitude of different places.
One position likely to see significant change is the point guard position.
Deron Williams, last season’s starter, has opted out of modest deal that followed his Brooklyn buyout, and looks to replace it with a high dollar multiyear deal that can take him to retirement. While a return is possible, Williams appears intent on testing the market.
Raymond Felton, last season’s primary reserve point guard, saw a slight resurgence to his once floundering career. Despite producing his worst PER ever (), Felton ran Rick Carlisle’s offense fairly well and proved he still has a role in this league.
With both a starting spot and reserve spot open for the Dallas Mavericks next season, here are three free agent PGs who could help the Mavs next season
PG Mike Conley
The career Memphis Grizzly appears set to hit the open market and entertain max-level offers as the top-rated free agent PG this summer. The 6’1” 28-year-old former Buckeye is a well-rounded player. Rated as the NBA’s #13 PG in player efficiency (19.45), Conley averaged 15.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.9 rebounds, earning a 7.4 estimated wins average.
Mike Conley Jr. represents the top of the free agent PG class and will be highly sought after by many teams this summer. The Dallas Mavericks are expected to be one of those teams.
PG Jeremy Linn
Jeremy Lin has been linked to the Dallas Mavericks for a while now. Not exactly the “star” he appeared to be with the Knicks, but not the “bum” he was painted to be with the Rockets soon after either, Lin is a strong player off the bench and offers an offensive spark and leadership qualities regardless of minutes played.
Lin, ranked #40 among PGs in PER, is a smart player capable of thriving in Rick Carlisle’s system. He’s not a starter but a very capable #2 PG can play well in multiple capacities.
The free agent market will be all over the place with Brandon Jennings. The former #10 overall pick was once seen as the next generation of star PGs but one untimely Achilles injury later (is there such a thing as a “timely” injury?) and Jennings is entering the market after posting career-worst numbers.

As Dallas Mavericks’ fans know all too well, Achilles rehab takes quite a while. Just last season the Mavs signed Wesley Matthews. Matthews, recovering from Achilles surgery himself, struggled to regain form last season. Jennings is on a very similar recovery timeline and like Matthews, won’t fully recover until the 2016-17 season.
Jennings is a former All-Star who, at just 26, still has half his career ahead of him. If the Dallas Mavericks are willing to roll the dice, Jennings could prove to be one of the best PGs in this free agent class and he could offer the best value of them all.

Could the Dallas Mavericks target any of these players this summer? The chances are great they’ll kick the tires on more than a couple of these guys and regardless of exact role, all three of these guys could find success in Carlisle’s system.
