The Dallas Mavericks enter free agency with the same plan they’ve had the past the past four offseasons: Go big or go home.

Since the Dallas Mavericks scuttled the 2011 NBA Champion team, they’ve been determined to reload the roster with young All-Stars. Having decided free agency is the best way to accomplish this goal, owner Mark Cuban and general manager, Donnie Nelson, have repeatedly set their sights on free agency’s biggest fish.

Whether it was Deron Williams, Dwight Howard, or DeAndre Jordan the strategy was the same– Swing for the fences.

Unfortunately, this “go big or go home” strategy hasn’t worked out for the Mavs. Year after year the Mavericks have been forced into Plan B, C, or even Plan F. Despite year after year of failure, the Mavs are staying true to the plan. The summer of 2016, the Mavericks will once again Go Big or Go Home.

Multiple sources are reporting the Dallas Mavericks are targeting Miami center and shot-blocking extraordinaire, Hassan Whiteside, along with the undisputed top point guard on the market, Mike Conley. Both players represent the best free agency has to offer (ignoring Lebron James and Kevin Durant, of course) and both players will be heavily courted in coming days.

What are the odds the Mavericks can snag one or both of these young All-Stars?

If history is any indicator the Mavericks will have their work cut out for them, but that won’t stop them from pushing all their chips to center of the table and going all in. In fact, the Mavericks are all but showing Chandler Parsons the door, just for a shot at both of these players.

PG Mike Conley Jr

The Dallas Mavericks have made their interest in the 30-year old point guard no secret. Prepared to hand out a max contract, the Mavs will be major players here. Conley is said to also be legitimately interested in the Mavs as the two plan to meet later today.

The biggest barrier in free agency is always the player’s current team since they can offer an extra year and increasingly higher salaries along the way. Memphis is now prepared to go max in order to keep Conley attached to their core group. With the familiarity of home, a playoff roster, and well over an extra $20M, it would be hard to see Mike Conley leaving Memphis.

Estimated Chance to sign Mike Conley: 20%

C Hassan Whiteside

Hassan Whiteside is the best shot-blocker in the game. He’s undisciplined but is able to dominate at both ends of the court in a way never seen in these parts. He has red flags but the talent seems to outweigh the baggage.

As of this morning it appears the Heat are ready to offer a max deal to keep Whiteside in Miami. They consequently have the inside track for the same reason Memphis has the inside track on Conley. But of outside suiters, the Mavericks appear to be frontrunners for Whiteside and a decision is expected by end of business today.

Estimated Chance to Sign Hassan Whiteside: 35%

Hassan Whiteside and Mike Conley are two big time players who turn this franchise around and make it more than just a perennial first round exiting playoff team.

Go Big or Go Home. It’s something Mavericks fans have grown accustomed to over the years. And while it’s been a failed strategy in the past, it doesn’t mean it’s always doomed for failure.

Does it?
