If there is any comparison between Yogi the Bear and Yogi Ferrell, it is that they are both smarter than the average bear. Mr.Ferrell has illustrated his smartness through his high basketball IQ and mental toughness for the game.

Yogi Ferrell signed a 10 day contract with the Dallas Mavericks last week, as the team was in desperate need for a point guard. The six foot guard from Indianapolis has proven to be more than just a one and done player.

Before joining the Mavs, the speedy point guard had an up and down  year with the Brooklyn Nets as he was signed and released a combined total of four times. The Nets finally released Ferrell in December after the organization seem poised to go in a different direction. One thing many NBA franchises overlook is that during his senior year, Yogi Ferrell had himself a season.

College Years: Indiana

During his first season at Indiana University, Ferrell’s game struggled as he could barely average more than ten points a game. His freshman year, he averaged 7.6 points a game, including 4.1 assists. That would be the last time during college years that Yogi’s points per game would be below 10 points.

While playing for the Hoosiers last season, Ferrell averaged  17.3 points a game and had 5.6 assists to go with his resume. His final year, the young guard was listed as a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award. This is an award given to the most outstanding college basketball players throughout the season. While the Indiana guard went undrafted, his collegiate numbers spoke for themselves.

More from Dallas Mavericks

Resurgence with the Mavericks

Ferrell has yet to match his numbers from college, but since being signed by Dallas the young guard sure has come close. Yogi Ferrell had his best game of the season Monday night as he helped the Mavs take down the the reining champs the Cleveland Cavaliers. Against the Cavs, Ferrell had 19 points to go with five rebounds, three assist and four steals. This was the first time since 2011, that the Mavericks had beaten a team with Lebron James.

The night before, the 23 year old helped Dallas make history again as the team beat the Spurs 105-101. The last time the Mavericks won a season game in San Antonio was back in 2010. In his first game for Dallas, Ferrell came up just short  of a double double as he finished the game with nine points and seven assists.

Over the past two games, the new guard for Dallas is averaging 14 points a game to go along with five assists. Before his time with the Mavs, Ferrell’s best game of the season came with the Nets as he had 13 points in a lop sided lost against the Los Angeles Clippers.

For the first time this season, the young point guard Yogi Ferrell has given the Dallas Mavericks hope. The new sensation in Dallas gave the team a much needed spark as Dirk Nowitzki and company beat two of the top teams in league on back to back nights.
