The Dallas Mavericks have one player who is set to breakout in 2017-18 and that man’s name is Seth Curry.

The Dallas Mavericks are all about development these days. No longer focused on the fleeting shortsightedness of win-at-all-costs, the Mavs are focused on the future. One player who’s future with the team is undetermined is Seth Curry.

Curry, brother of Steph, has had a slow climb in his NBA career. Not the instant success, Seth Curry has been a bit of a journeyman over his four-year NBA career. The product of Duke University, Curry has played with Cleveland, Memphis, Phoenix, Sacramento, and Dallas at the NBA level. But despite the nomadic lifestyle, Curry has found a way to improve.

At age 27, Seth Curry hit his stride for the Mavericks last season. He averaged career highs in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and player efficiency rating. He propelled himself from an end-of-the-bench player to a fanrag’s 85th best player in the NBA.

Seth Curry is one of the most offensively efficient players in the NBA and it stands to reason if his opportunities increase, so will his total numbers.

The Numbers

His 42.5 percent shooting from beyond the arch is among the best in the NBA. Despite his relative small stature, Curry is surprisingly decent on the defensive end.

As Fanrag points out, only six other shooting guards had positive scores in both offensive real plus-minus and defensive real plus-minus.

Being the brother of former NBA MVP Steph Curry often comes with unrealistic expectations. Fans expecting Seth to be like Steph are sure to be disappointed. But in all honesty, their numbers aren’t that far off.

As stated earlier, Seth Curry shot an impressive 42.5 percent from deep last season. Steph? He had a 41 percent success rate. Mavs.com pointed out that when coming off screens, running pick-and-rolls, spot-up shooting, and in isolation, Steph scored 1.082 points per possession while Seth finished with 1.079 points per possession.

For Seth those numbers are good enough for fifth in the league. To state it differently, Seth resides on the top of a scoring list dominated by All-Stars. So why isn’t he considered to be the same type player? The only answer to that is because he’s not getting the same number of opportunities as the others.

More from Dallas Mavericks

Seth Curry is one of the most offensively efficient players in the NBA and it stands to reason if his opportunities increase, so will his total numbers.

Harrison Barnes will remain the No. 1 option on this Mavs roster but it’s very clear Seth Curry deserves an increased workload, in this his contract year. It’s hard to tell what the market will decide in summer of ’18 but it’s not out of the question that Curry will garner a max deal – especially if his development progresses like it’s been trending.

Next season the impulse will be to feed Barnes and give the dynamic rookie, Dennis Smith Jr, all the opportunities he wants. But it would be wise to focus on Curry because he has the potential to explode this season.

Final Thought

As a pending free agent, the Mavericks would be wise to give Seth Curry as many opportunities as possible. If he’s about to breakout like I’m suggesting, then they will know his market price and make sure he doesn’t slip away in free agency. If he just keeps doing what he’s doing, at the very least, he becomes a valuable trade piece at the deadline next season.
