The Dallas Mavericks may have to make a big trade before they are considered elite playoff contenders. A trade for center DeAndre Jordan could be possible.

The overall talent on the Dallas Mavericks roster has improved tremendously but that still does not mean there are not areas they could improve. The Los Angeles Clippers do not seemingly want to admit they are rebuilding but without point guard, Chris Paul that is exactly what they would be doing. Both of these teams could potentially help each other as the Mavericks are only one big piece away from having a legit contender.

The Dallas Mavericks could look to pry away one of the Clippers remaining stars as the team will likely deal them sooner rather than later. The biggest names remaining would be power forward, Blake Griffin and center DeAndre Jordan.

The Mavericks have a ton of cap space and should have room for Jordan’s contract if they make a few subtle move. Jordan is one of the premier defensive centers in the NBA and would make for an excellent addition to this Mavericks roster.

Currently, there are only two centers on the Mavericks roster and that is a bit concerning. Jeff Withey and Salah Mejri will not be a long-term answer at the position but Jordan would be a staple of the Mavericks franchise.

When paired with Dennis Smith Jr along with the other talent on this roster the Mavericks would easily become considered a legitimate playoff contender. Adding star forward, Blake Griffin would make little to no sense as the Mavericks deepest position has to be power forward.

So the only real option when it comes to trading with the Clippers has to be Jordan. The Mavericks really only have one other weak spot on the roster and that is at the shooting guard position.

More from Dallas Mavericks

Sure Seth Curry and Wesley Matthews are great players but their contracts are a lot more inflated than their talent warrants. They also will not have the same impact in playing with Smith as some of the more elite combinations such as the revamped Houston Rockets team that has Chris Paul and James Harden playing with each other.

Still, the biggest issue seems to be the lack of star power at the center position. The amount of depth at the forward position gives the team some extra trade capital but they need to be incredibly wise with the talent on this roster.

A trade for Jordan or Cleveland Cavaliers center, Kevin Love would make the most sense heading into the new season. Both players may also not require a ton of trade capital to acquire as rumors about both being trade-worthy assets have floated around for most of the summer.

The Mavericks have seemingly been one star away from having an elite team in the west and the easiest players they could trade for early in the 2017 season could be the players they need the most.
