The Dallas Mavericks have finally acquired the services of DeAndre Jordan. How will this move affect the Mavericks and their future plans?

The Dallas Mavericks and Stars have been all over the headlines lately as both the NBA and NHL are in full free agency mode. The Dallas Stars may have missed out on John Tavares however the Mavericks landed a pretty big fish in DeAndre Jordan. Now, what does the Jordan signing mean for the Mavericks and the future of this franchise? Let’s take a look.

The Dallas Mavericks had to tank in 2017 to get to where they are today. Dumping bad contracts and obtaining high draft picks is just the formula to land some future star power and that is exactly what happened.

Famously, Jordan as a free agent got cold feet in 2015 when it came time to sign with Dallas, however, three years later it appears he is ready. Jordan signed a one-year deal worth around $24.1 million and that gives both the former Los Angeles Clipper and the Mavericks some flexibility about their plans for the future.

This was somewhat surprising as the two sides never seemed to be all that interested in revisiting talks from 2015. This also is a sign that the Mavericks are attempting to compete now during this “super team” era by nurturing high-value draft picks, with just a sprinkle of free agent star power.

Jordan not only adds that extra boost of talent but also adds some veteran leadership to this roster. Jordan will instantly make this team better as he can be a prolific shot blocker and rim protector.

With a lineup of Jordan, Luka Doncic, Dennis Smith Jr, Harrison Barnes, and Wes Matthews the immediate future of the Mavericks is looking brighter than it did a few weeks ago.

Let’s also not forget Dirk Nowitzki is still on the team and can contribute in several ways, so this team is not hurting for young talent anymore. Worst case scenario the Dallas Mavericks continue to rebuild their young roster by landing some free agents in next year and getting some big contracts off of the books.

Speaking of 2019, it is set to be a huge year for free agents in the NBA as Kevin Durant, Kristaps Porzingis, Karl-Anthony Towns, Klay Thompson, Kemba Walker and potentially Paul George could potentially become available on the open market.

That will also be the year in which the Mavericks see a lot of their aging contracts come off of the books/also the same season in which Jordan’s contract is up. Dallas could be looking at a lot of big decisions a year from now and should have enough cap space to make a major impact.

A shake-up in 2019 would likely result with Nowitzki, Jordan, and Matthews all potentially moving on without really any major headaches. There will be plenty of defensive-minded centers on the market as well as other productive big men who could be very valuable to this team.

This deal sets both sides up with some security for 2018 and if all goes well a very productive future. Jordan is also the type of player the Dallas Mavericks have been missing for quite some time so it will be interesting to see just how he affects this team on the court.
