3 Teams Who Could Still Sign Stephon Gilmore in Free Agency
By Cem Yolbulan
Every year, there is at least one player who remains a free agent for a mind-boggling amount of time. One of those players this offseason is former Cowboys cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Despite having an excellent season last year, the five-time Pro Bowler is still unsigned.
It was surprising that the Cowboys didn't want to bring Gilmore back. The 33-year-old played every game and over 1000 snaps last year, only allowing 55.8% completion when targeted, while recording two interceptions and a career-high 68 tackles. Dallas doesn't necessarily need more cornerbacks with Trevon Diggs returning from injury and DaRon Bland turning into a star but having the veteran presence of Gilmore would have been valuable.
The All-Pro defender, however, still has suitors on the market. He is scheduled to meet with the Vikings on Monday and should be signing with a team soon. Let's take a look at three likely landing spots for Stephon Gilmore.
Minnesota Vikings
This is the most obvious one since we know that there is mutual interest. The Vikings and the Cowboys just swapped corners as Minnesota brought in Nahshon Wright. They are still not happy with their cornerback depth as they are scheduled to start Shaquil Griffin and Byron Murphy Jr. That is certainly not an elite starting duo.
Gilmore would immediately be the best cornerback on the team if he were to sign in Minnesota. The Vikings have the potential to be a solid defense as they have talented defenders like Andrew Van Ginkel, Blake Cashman, and Ivan Pace Jr. but they need more secondary help. Gilmore could be the guy to help them on that front.
